Chapter Seventeen
Harinderâs Life Is an Off-Brand Princess Movie
When he comes out much, much later, Jericho is sitting on the couch. Harinder winds the long way around so he can sit as far from Jericho as possible, still not managing to meet his eyes or look directly at him. He tries to tell what Jerichoâs thinking from his posture, but Jericho isnât giving anything away. He sits casually, but maybe too much so.
Okay, maybe his brain is getting ahead of him. Itâs not like Jericho has a crush on him. Jericho is a really chill personâmaybe a little desperateâand heâs okay with letting Harinder fuck up like that because heâsâ¦nice. Nicer than Harinder expected or was willing to accept. Just because Jericho didnât freak out doesnât mean they get to make something of this, or anything else that Mint was implying.
âSo,â Harinder begins, swallowing past his oppressively dry throat.
âYeah?â
âSo. Uh.â
Heâs pretty sure he hears Jericho snicker, and tosses a scowl at him, but all he sees is a patient barely there smile. Thereâs a coppery beauty mark above Jerichoâs lip. This close, Harinder can see Jericho has faint blotchy spots high on his cheeks and temples, mixed in with a few acne scars. Harinder doesnât know why such things would be considered blemishesâtheyâre unquestionably adorable.
Wait. Holy shit, what?
âAbout. About what I said earlier.â Harinder is pretty sure thatâs what heâs attempting to say.
Jericho waves a hand, flippant. âDonât worry about it, man. You were stressed; I get it. Weâre cool.â
Fuck.
âAlright,â Harinder hedges, staring at his fingernails and picking nervously at the polish, chipping away at the black over his thumb. âAnd, uh.â Jericho hums in acknowledgment. âWhat happened after that.â Jericho hums again, quieter. Shier. âWould it be okay if we didnât make a big deal about it?â
Jerichoâs face twitches. He turns away, shoulder lifting casually, putting a barrier between Harinder and any revealing expression that might cross his features. Against his better judgment, Harinder leans forward in an attempt to see him.
âYeah, thatâs fine. Donât worry; I wonât bring it up. Like it never happened.â Jericho sounds completely cool, unbothered, even.
Harinderâs back straightens. âWhy would you do that?â
Jericho sends him a reproachful look over his shoulder. âYou literally just askedââ
âNot what I meant.â
âEnlighten me, then.â
âNot making a big deal out of it doesnât mean it didnât happen.â Harinder ignores the way his palms are cold with sweat. âI just donât want you to think it means something you donât want.â That soundsâ¦weirdly ambiguous, and also not what Harinder is trying to say. âIâm just, Iâm trying toâ¦â
Fuck. Why is being sincere hard? He gives up, blurting out, âI donât even know if youâre gay!â
Jericho whirls around. For a sick, terrifying second, Harinder thinks heâs about to get punched.
âWhat do you mean, âdonât know if Iâm gayâ?â Jericho all but yelps. âHoly shit, of course Iâm gay.â
Harinderâs mouth hangs open, lax. He didnât expect this at all, even after Jericho showed no qualms about kissing him back. âJericho,â he says slowly, âyouâve said âno homo,â like, eight times since we met.
